As vessel operations become increasingly data-driven and commercially complex, shipowners, operators and charterers are facing growing pressure to manage voyage-related claims efficiently and cost-effectively.
While the industry has made significant advances in voyage optimisation, fuel efficiency and vessel performance monitoring, a gap often remains between operational events at sea and the formal processes used to resolve commercial disputes. In many cases, claims are only addressed once positions have hardened, external counsel has been engaged and costs have already begun to escalate.
To help address this challenge, GTT Marine has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Quadraant Legal to explore the development of a structured Claims Support & Advisory framework for the maritime sector.
Addressing a Critical Industry Challenge
Voyage-related disputes frequently involve complex technical, operational and contractual considerations. Common areas of contention include:
- Speed and consumption claims
- Voyage performance disputes
- Charterparty performance issues
- Documentation and evidence challenges
- Delayed engagement of advisors
Experience shows that the first 24 to 72 hours following an incident or emerging dispute are often critical. Yet this is precisely the period during which owners and operators may have limited access to structured support that combines operational, technical and legal perspectives.
The consequences can include increased claim costs, escalation to arbitration, incomplete documentation and missed opportunities for early resolution.
A Collaborative and Proactive Approach
Through this collaboration, GTT Marine and Quadraant Legal intend to explore a framework that brings together:
- Vessel performance expertise
- Voyage analytics
- Operational understanding
- Maritime legal advisory support
The objective is not to replace existing dispute resolution processes or legal representation. Rather, the focus is on helping customers make informed decisions earlier in the claims lifecycle, supported by reliable operational data, technical expertise and legal awareness.
Initial Areas of Focus
The initiative will initially explore support across several key areas, including:
- Speed and consumption disputes
- Voyage performance assessments
- Charterparty support
- Documentation review
- Evidence gathering support
- Early-stage claims advisory
The proposed service is designed to complement existing relationships with P&I Clubs, legal counsel and arbitrators, while helping customers strengthen their position before disputes escalate.
Unlocking Greater Value from Operational Data
GTT Marine already helps customers improve fleet performance through vessel data, voyage optimisation and performance management solutions.
As the maritime industry continues to generate increasing volumes of operational data, there is a growing opportunity to leverage this information beyond performance monitoring alone. Insights derived from vessel operations can also play an important role in supporting commercial discussions, assessing claims and improving decision-making when disputes arise.
By combining technical insight with legal awareness, GTT Marine and Quadraant Legal aim to explore a more integrated approach to operational support across the maritime claims landscape.
Looking Ahead
The long-term vision of this initiative is to explore the development of a claims intelligence capability that helps customers:
- Respond more quickly to emerging disputes
- Improve the quality and availability of supporting documentation
- Reduce unnecessary escalation
- Make better-informed commercial decisions
This collaboration reflects GTT Marine's ongoing commitment to supporting customers throughout the operational lifecycle of their vessels and to exploring innovative ways of transforming data into actionable business value.
As discussions progress, GTT Marine and Quadraant Legal look forward to engaging with industry stakeholders and gathering feedback on how a more proactive approach to claims support can contribute to improved outcomes across the maritime sector.
